In the wake of 9/11, we stood united as one nation. The commonalities that bonded us during that time is a quality we need to strive to return to - that common purpose as a nation. Therefore, it is not just the tragedy of September 11, 2001 that we must remember but the feeling of unity that we felt on September 12, 2001. The patriotism, unity, and civility we displayed afterwards is just as important as remembering the horror and devastation caused by the 9/11 attacks. It was a moment when nothing divided us because we were ALL Americans. So, as this anniversary marking of this infamous day passes, let us look to rekindle the sense of unity, purpose and selflessness that was exhibited by our brave fellow Americans who paid the ultimate price in their devotion to their fellow citizens. We will never forget!

Now more than ever, it is important to be Positive, Productive, and Professional! One way that we reward students at Waterford Junior High School is by issuing Tiger Tickets. During regular school, we hold a student store every Friday where students can buy candy, snacks, water, school supplies and other items. During Distance Learning, you can still earn “Virtual” Tiger Tickets from your teachers for the three P’s or for other reasons teachers design, such as being early to class . We will keep track of the number of “Virtual” Tiger Tickets you earn. Each Friday we will have a raffle with prizes awarded to 5 students. Winners will be posted on teachers’ Google Classrooms. Students may then come to school, with parent permission, to pick up their prizes during non-school hours. So, Tigers, let’s Be Positive, Be Productive, and Be Professional! July 30, 2020 Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, We apologize that the first Round Up letters sent included two versions in Spanish instead of one English version and one Spanish version. We realized the error after the Round Up letters and appointment times were sent out in the mail. Hello, Waterford Junior High School Students and Families! You have two choices for school programming beginning August 11. One is Distance Learning with our own AMAZING WJHS staff via Zoom and Google Classroom OR Independent Study through our district via online Acellus courses. As principal of Waterford Junior High School, I am advocating that students and families choose Distance Learning with our own WJHS teachers who work very hard to create a meaningful, rigorous academic program for our students. The Distance Learning model would transition back to the school campus once health officials allow it (with safety precautions followed), while the WUSD Independent Study option is a full semester (until January 2021) commitment. If you would like to discuss the two options offered by WUSD, please call me at the school cell phone so I can provide information as you make this family decision. Sincerely, Mrs. Hall 209-596-9289

We will know more in the next few days and be making an announcement of the "official" plan the week of 5/11. In addition, we will be doing some special things for our graduates. Yard signs and bumper stickers have been ordered for graduates and families, and we will be in touch once they arrive. Lastly, the WJHS campus will be adorned with graduation "SWAG" the last two weeks of May! Congratulations Graduates! We are very proud of you. Here's a sneak peek of the Bumper Stickers headed your way...a little something to look forward to! Warmly, Mrs. Hall

Hey Tigers, Let's end the Teacher Appreciation Week with a final "shout out" to our amazing teachers at Waterford Junior High School! They are knowledgeable, hard working, and they TRULY care about their students and families. I am honored to serve alongside them. Thank you to Ms. Ashley, whom you know from our front office! She came up with the idea to create the video and worked hard this week to put it together. Thank you to the students and staff who contributed to the video through videos, pictures, and artwork. Hello Tigers! We hope you are doing well! We STILL miss you all very much! Since Spring Break is officially over, it is time to get back to work to keep your skills sharp! For now in these times when it is difficult to maintain "normal," 30 minutes a day, Monday-Friday, is all we ask for each class! Some families may prefer to create a structured time schedule each day for each subject, while other families may have students choose what they "want to work on when" as long as students work on each class for 30 minutes during a 24 hour period (we know some of students are night owls). Here are some tips, tools, and information for the week of 4/20: 1. Students should check in to teachers' Google Classroom pages often for updates on missing work to complete as well as new topics/assignments to explore and complete each week. 2. We have created an optional "Suggested Schedule and Time Tracker" for students and parents to use each week. Students can make a copy on Google Docs or print it out. From there, students should write down the To-Do list for each subject for the week as they check Google Classroom, and then work for a minimum of 30 minutes each day of the week for each class, including PE and electives. This will help parents and families keep track of what students are doing in either a digital or hard copy. To get the "Suggested Schedule and Time Tracker," click this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13J3kXrRMnOywtaK6W11XRoZhea0BENe3LAIvmzYI24Y/edit?usp=sharing 3. Teachers are calling home to 2nd period classes this week, and posting "office hours" on Google Classroom pages when students and parents can expect a quick response to questions/emails during those time periods. 4. Teachers are asking students to check in with them once a week as a Google Classroom assignment for extra credit or virtual Tiger Tickets. 5. Virtual Tiger Tickets will be offered by teachers, as appropriate beginning this week. Students who earn virtual Tiger Tickets will be eligible for raffle prizes and free yearbooks each Friday during the month of May. 6. 4th Quarter Progress Report Grades are due Friday. This means if students still have a chance this week to improve their grades by completing missing work/optional assignments before grades are mailed next week. We know that many students have improved their last report card grades since we've been staying at home! Great job! 7. 8th graders: at this point, graduation is postponed, and not cancelled. We will communicate information as we are advised. Finally, please do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions or concerns. Please call or text (209) 596-9289 to reach Mrs. Hall. On behalf of your school family, we want you to know we miss you and care about you! Sincerely, Mrs. Hall

We hope you are enjoying Spring Break, Waterford Junior High School! We enjoyed reaching out by phone this past week to speak to students and parents. Our teachers are now in the process of inviting all parents with email addresses on file to their Google Classrooms. By accepting the invitation, parents will receive email notifications when students submit assignments to their teachers. If you do not receive parent/guardian invitations to your student's teachers' Google Classrooms by Tuesday, April 21, and would like one, please email me at yhall@waterford.k12.ca.us or call the school cell phone at (209) 596-9289. Happy First Day of Spring Break, Tigers! We hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families. We appreciate and applaud the work the entire Tiger family has been putting forth the past few weeks from our teachers and staff to our students and families. Today we especially want to applaud our parents and family members who are taking care of their students at home, and now helping them more than ever with distance learning. It's not easy! One of our parents, Leticia, who has a 5th grader at Lucille Whitehead as well as a 7th and 8th grader at WJHS, shared these pictures with us as an example of her strategy to keep her students busy while staying at home. According to Leticia, she is taking away devices and video games during the day, and keeping the kids at the kitchen table to do schoolwork. If you would like to share your experiences working with your student from home, please post a comment. In addition, if you need ideas or help with getting your student more engaged in distance learning from home, also post a comment. We want to help you! Please share this post!

Hey Tigers...How about some sunshine today? Today is "California Poppy Day" and Mrs. Hall's grandfather's birthday. Today he would have been 108, and he LOVED California poppies. The California poppy is commonly seen blooming in the spring and summer along country roads and freeways throughout much of the state, making this plant a highly recognizable symbol of California, and April 6 of each year is officially designated as California Poppy Day. Dear Parents, Students and Families: We at Waterford Junior High School hope that this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. First, we would like our students to know that we MISS seeing them at school every day, and we look forward to the day when we can all go back to school! During the time that classes are suspended at Waterford Junior High School, we hope that students are keeping a schedule at home that includes time spent working English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Physical activity, art, music, and reading for fun should also be part of the routine! This is a reminder that all teachers at Waterford Junior High School have created Google Classrooms to communicate with students in regards to options they have regarding instructions/materials for completing missing work, recommendations for review activities of material/content already taught, and ideas for enrichment. If you haven’t done so already, ask your student to show you their teachers’ Google Classroom pages. All Waterford Junior High School students know how to access Google Classroom on their school assigned Google Chromebook or by logging into their school "Google Account" on any device. Most students have already joined their teachers' Google Classrooms early in the year. We have created a Google Spreadsheet for parents and students that lists each teachers Google Classroom Code (in the event a student hasn't joined a teacher's Google Classroom yet). The link is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wPIiCGfHXDqmB5KYDT6pP5DomXanXOK4-PQ92o2fyWg/edit?usp=sharing If you have any questions, please email me at yhall@waterford.k12.ca.us or you can call or text the school cell phone during school hours, Monday-Friday at (209) 596-9289 . Again, we hope that our students and families are safe and well. Please do your part to stop the spread of COVID-19 by following guidelines to stay home, wash your hands frequently, sanitize surfaces and maintain social distancing. Take care, Tiger Family! Sincerely, Mrs. Hall, Principal WJHS

Good afternoon, Parents and Families: A Shelter in Place was called by Mrs. Hall at Waterford Junior High School at approximately 12:00 p.m. when the school received information that there was a danger to the school. A false transmission was made on a "walkie talkie" about a shooting. No threat was found to students or the school, and the campus was deemed secure. The Shelter in Place was called off at approximately 12:06 p.m and normal school activities were resumed. Law enforcement was contacted and the incident is under investigation. Students ate lunch as usual and are now in classes. At this time, school will be dismissed as usual at 2:30 p.m. Families will also receive an automated phone message with this information after school today. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hall, principal, at 874-2382.

Dear Parents and Guardians, One of the manners in which we keep you informed of your child’s academic progress and behavior is through the use of progress reports. You will receive a progress report six times during the school year. A progress report does not reflect a final grade; it is simply a manner to keep you updated on your child’s progress. Final grades, (report cards), are issued twice per school year- in December and May. The first progress reports of the year were mailed home yesterday. Please note the following key for citizenship grades: E- Excellent S- Satisfactory N- Needs Improvement U- Unsatisfactory Note: In the 19-20 Parent/Student Handbook, criteria for Outstanding citizenship was explained. Please note that from this point on, “Excellent citizenship” is equal to the “Outstanding citizenship” criteria outlined on page 19 of the 19-20 Parent/Student Handbook. All citizenship criteria is explained on pages 19-20 of the Parent/Student Handbook. If you have questions or concerns, you can reach the school office at (209) 874-2382.

Dear Families, WJHS students will be participating in state testing (CAASPP/SBAC) in during an extended Homeroom (8:15 a.m. to 10:23 a.m.) from April 2-April 5 (Language Arts) and April 9-12 (Math). Only 8th grade students will take the California Science Test during Science classes the week of April 8. During the weeks of April 2 and April 8, testing will begin each morning at 8:15 a.m., so it is extremely important that your child does not miss school or arrive tardy. The purpose of the testing is to measure how well students are mastering Common Core Standards. Families will receive reports of how students scored by mail in the fall. Please encourage your child to give his or her best effort on the test, and please see that he or she gets plenty of rest and proper nutrition during our testing weeks. We will have a school-wide assembly to explain state testing and expectations on Thursday, March 28 during Homeroom. Should you have any questions about state testing or your child’s participation, please contact Mrs. Hall at (209) 874-2382.

Dear Parent/Guardian: How can I help my child get ready for the CAASPP? You are an important part of your child’s education. Some things you can do to help your child are: • Talk about the test with your child. Make sure they are not scared or anxious. • Tell your child that you and his or her teacher have high expectations and that you are both there to help, every step of the way. • Take a practice test with your child. • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing. Each spring, students in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on his or her grade level: • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy (grades three through eight and grade eleven) • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics (grades three through eight and grade eleven) The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what your child knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school. California is implementing the California Next Generation Science Standards. As part of that implementation, students in grades five, eight and high school will take the California Science Test, or CAST. To learn more about either the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp. You can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html. For information on specific dates and times when your child will take the test in each subject, please contact your child’s school. Sincerely, Yvette Hall Principal Waterford Jr. High 209-874-2382

If a school lockdown were to be initiated between now and 2:30 p.m., WJHS would post the information on social media as well as initiate automated telephone calls to students' homes. Please feel free to call the school with comments or questions. (209) 874-2382
