senior game started today

To our Waterford community and WHS families,

We are aware that members of this year’s graduating class have begun organizing the game commonly known as “Senior Assassin.” This activity is not sponsored, organized, or endorsed by Waterford Unified School District or Waterford High School and takes place outside of school.

We understand that senior year is an exciting time, and traditions like this are meant to help students make lasting memories before graduation. At the same time, safety must always come first.

Across many communities, these games have raised safety concerns. Community members who are unaware of the game may become alarmed when they see students hiding, chasing, or approaching others with water guns, especially from a distance. The most significant concern we have observed, however, is distracted driving. Because the game often requires students to travel from location to location to find their target, groups of students may be driving while actively engaged in the game and communicating on their phones. In some cases, participants attempt to “assassinate” their peers while driving, in parking lots, or before a vehicle has fully and safely come to a stop.

We recognize that student organizers often establish rules intended to make the game safer, and we appreciate those efforts. However, the excitement of the moment can sometimes lead to rules not being followed as intended. We encourage parents to stay aware of the activity, talk with their children about safety, and consider following the game’s social media account so they can monitor how it is being played. If you choose to allow your child to participate, please talk with them about safe driving, awareness around parking lots and roadways, and how quickly playful actions can be misinterpreted and lead to real world consequences.

Participants should remember that this game may not be played on school campuses, and students may not bring anything that resembles a weapon onto any Waterford Unified School District campus. Doing so will result in school disciplinary action.

We are also sharing this information with our broader community so residents are aware of the activity and do not become unnecessarily alarmed if they see students participating outside of school.

Let’s work together to help our seniors enjoy a fun and memorable year while keeping our schools and community safe.
