Most school bus-related injuries happen outside the bus, often because a driver or pedestrian wasn’t paying attention.
🚗 Drivers:
Put down your phone, slow down near bus stops, and watch for children crossing the street—especially in the early morning and afternoon hours.
👟 Students:
Avoid distractions when boarding or exiting the bus. Look both ways, wait for the driver’s signal, and cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus where the driver can see you.
Together, we can make every bus stop a safe stop!

When a school bus extends its stop sign and turns on the flashing red lights, it means children are loading or unloading — and traffic in both directions must stop.
🚦 It’s the law in California:
➡️ On two-lane roads or roads without a raised median, both directions must stop.
➡️ Remain stopped until the lights stop flashing and the stop arm is retracted.
Stopping for the bus keeps our students safe as they get on and off — let’s all do our part to protect them!

Did you know the most dangerous areas around a school bus are the “safety zones” — the spaces 10 feet in front, behind, and on each side of the bus?
These are the areas where it’s hardest for drivers to see children.
✅ Always stay back until the driver signals that it’s safe to cross.
✅ Make eye contact with the driver before stepping off the curb.
✅ Never walk behind a school bus.
Let’s work together to keep every child safe around the bus!

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting scheduled training exercises tomorrow at Waterford High School and at a vacant house near Bentley and H Street. Please be aware that you may notice an increased law enforcement presence in these areas during the training.
There is no cause for concern—this is a planned exercise and not related to any active incident.
We appreciate your understanding as our local law enforcement continues their training to help keep our community safe.
